This deals with the idea that there were individuals throughout time that may have had romantic relationships but could not pursue them based off the social reaction or expectations of the time. There we're multiple recorded cases of people who are lifelong partners that then revealed that they had a romantic relationship. There have also been recorded cases of individuals in history that were clear about their relationship, but it was sanitized as it made others uncomfortable. This sanitization and erasure of people reduces the collective bonds between families and societies. If the people we love must hide, then they are regulated to shadows and only part of their life is shared. Humanity is not meant to be compartmentalized.
This is a heavily taboo subject in the Caribbean, specifically The Bahamas. Many members of the LGBTQ+ community may be disowned, abused, or victimized. As an extremely traditional society, there is consistent fear of backlash. There are frequent cases of individuals only comfortable with exploring their sexuality once they have left home for fear of backlash. It is rare for an individual to be “out” as it is illegal and elicits violent and immediate reactions.
In the least, history should be recorded without bias. Not sanitized. So that people who look back can see themselves there and know they have always been around.
